I’m sure that most of you have probably come across some blogs on “lifestyle design”. I’ve come across a great deal of these websites while using StumbleUpon or blog-hopping in search of some new ideas and quality writing. Personally, I hate the term, and for the most part, I can’t stand these blogs. How did people find happiness just a few short years ago, before we could design our lives? But since so many people seem to be fascinated by this area, I thought I would provide some step-by-step instructions for creating one of these cookie-cutter blogs without needing to actually use any of your own thoughts or ideas. One caveat, if you are over 35, you’re too late for the party. Young bloggers only. (Your ideas are probably too outdated to be cool anyway).
How to Build a “Lifestyle Design” Blog
Step 1 – Assume that you have figured out the best possible way to live and do everything, and then adopt the appropriately astronomical level of self-confidence and bravado.
Step 2 – Be sure to include the words “hack”, “tweak”, and “income stream”. Replace all use of “idea” with “meme”. It is appropriate to call anything you do a lifestyle “experiment” that is being methodologically “tested”.
Step 3 – Write about travel. But careful here, don’t write any interesting thoughts on your travel experiences. No, no, write about “travel hacks”, which means tell people to pack light and decide against bringing their wedding china. You see, most people bring 17 suitcases with them when they travel, even for a weekend. But not you. You are special. You bring 1 dark-colored t-shirt, zip-off pants/shorts, and fivefingers sandals. Rest assured, you are now prepared for any social setting you may find yourself in. Write condescendingly about all those people with their shirts that need washing/ironing, pants that don’t turn into shorts, and shoes that require socks. Fools.
Oh, and don’t forget to pack your iPhone so you can Tweet your locations and remind your followers how awesome/worldly you are.
Step 4 - Link to at least 7 other blogs with the same travel tip(s?) you are espousing.
Step 5 – Write about debt. Be sure to use the term “snowflake”. If you aren’t in debt now, get into it. It will give you more street cred.
Step 6 – Mention Tim Ferriss in a positive way (is there any other way to write about him?)
Step 7 – Write about those aspirations you have that make you truly unique. These must be desires for traveling the world, being rich without working, and changing lives. Ensure your readers that you will teach them to do all of these things.
Step 8 – Place a minimum of 25 ad links throughout the text of all the posts, quit your day job, sit back, and join the “new rich”.
I hope that you don’t take my suggestions too lightly. These are all requirements for being a part of the “lifestyle design” movement. Should you miss a step or say something out of line, you will not succeed. If you should encounter any critics, don’t worry, they’re inevitably just brainwashed drones of that corporate world that produced your laptop and pays for all the advertising on your site. Maybe someday they’ll see the light.
